+1, pulling this up seems the obvious way to avoid the conflicts/branching
from doing it at the shards. Don't we also want to inhibit these handlers
firing again for the same update? For these functions, that might not matter,
but it won't always be true that the `before_doc_update` functions are
idempotent.
