Use of 'docname' in documents unclear

I am new to Cloudant and couchdb so forgive my ignorance, but I'm finding
it difficult to understand what you mean by 'docname'. I tried googling what it
implied in Cloudant/couchdb but couldn't find anything useful. I have to assume
it means the _id property of the record ... by why not say docId then ?
