Could reproduce locally when unpacking the tarball into a path that has no .git 
dir anywhere up to /.

I remember digging in there a good while back, rebar does this `git describe 
--always --tags` business, but I forgot how to work around it.

If anyone has a pointer, I’d be much obliged.
