Patch looks good to me.
About maintaining an HBase 0.96-specific branch, my guess is that there isn't
really a need to do that. As far as I know, HBase 0.96 and HBase 0.98 are
wire-protocol compatible, and I think the support the same HFile format
(although I'm not sure about that).
If we really want to specifically keep supporting HBase 0.96, I think we could
probably also just do that in the same branch, using reflection or something to
deal with the API changes at runtime, as the API changes that affect Crunch
don't seem to be in the critical path. However, I think the days of HBase 0.96
are pretty numbered -- I've heard that there won't be another 0.96 release, and
the major vendors are moving to HBase 0.98 in their next release as well.
