Yeah, that looks like a real bug and the fix you proposed is the way to go. 
Here's a patch w/the fix and a test to verify the functionality; I also made a 
slight tweak to ensure that the error message you get on a serialized AvroType 
that has already been initialized is useful/correct.

Will commit this in the next couple of hours if there are no objections.
