Hi Richard,
               You were right I was mixing the versions of uimaj-core and 
uimaj-json.
             The error got resolved when I changed their versions  to 2.8.1.

Could it be that you are mixing JARs from different version of UIMA, e.g. 
uimaj-core 2.7.0 with uimaj-json 2.10.0 or something like that?
