I had to add quite a few packages to the classpath when I set up ctakes in Eclipse to get it running. Seeing the specific error you're getting would be useful, as well as how you're running it.
If you need more logging information you can try setting the DEBUG level in log4j.xml too. I'm trying to do a fresh dev installation so I can finally move from developing on my personal laptop to my work computer, and am not having any luck getting up and running. I've tried installing the UIMA SDK manually, creating UIMA_HOME variable, and even adding the various UIMA jars as external dependencies, and while that gets rid of this particular error and actually allows the UIMA CVD window to launch, I get other errors then when I try to load an analysis engine. I don't recall having to install UIMA SDK or add any external jars the last time I set up cTAKES, so I haven't gone too far down that road to try to fix things - I feel like I am missing some major configuration step.
