Actually, I think some of the discussion above in the first paragraph
belongs in comments in the code that make the intent of the algorithm clearer.
You added a few comments, but I think they should be expanded. The things you
mention above as "that code is correct" ,... well it is not at all clear from
the code that this is the intent of the algorithm. ---
