Once https://github.com/apache/datafusion-comet/pull/7135 merges, the Comet project will restrict the number of open PRs to 3 for contributors without write access. This follows the approach that many other Apache projects are taking, including arrow-rs, datafusion, and iceberg-rust.
The motivation is that in this age of generative AI, PRs are being created faster than project maintainers can review them. Many of these PRs are very worthy of being merged, but frankly, it is exhausting for the core maintainers to keep up. We hope this approach helps us all focus on the most important PRs at any given time. As the project matures and gains more maintainers, this process should get easier, but it will take some time.
