I'm interested in this. How can I get more details?
very warm welcome. Developers are always needed :-)
Here's where I'm strong:
C++: I've been a full-time professional C++ developer for the past 14
years (Two different companies; both of which are software developers
where I work(ed) on the flagship product).
It's seldom these days to see a C++ developer. Most code of
OpenOffice.org is written in C++ so you would fast become familar with it.
Java: SCJP 5 and SCBCD 5
Familiar with CVS and open source development.
If I commit to something, I do it.
Not so strong:
I play with Derby at home. Embedded it in a Swing app using JDBC and
tinkered a little on GlassFish and JPA.
I have not pulled down or even looked at the OpenOffice source yet.
I'm just an occasional user; e.g., do a mail-merge on my Derby DB and
print labels.
Time: I'll be able to devote 4-8 hours a week to this.
I'd consider other projects if it would be more helpful (preferably
Java or Java and C++).
So here come some starting points how to get up to speed. First step
would be to get a build running. Perhaps you could use a ready one just
to avoid building from the ground.
The two modules you need are dbaccess and connectivity. dbaccess
contains the hight level database parts and connectivity gives the
serveral drivers a home.

(You don't have to read all of it ;-)
To get Derby embedded into OOo you have to verify that Derby can live
with a storage where it should save all it's data. That's the way Hsqldb
(has to) do(es) it.
How about starting with a driver for Derby may be the same way we did
for Mysql. Have a look at the sources how it works.
That's enough information at this point I guess.
It's not that hard as it seems to be. :-)
Feel free to ask questions. I'll always help where I can or find someone
who can.
Have a great day,
Ocke
