I suspect that this is just a JVM version problem, as you said. I
can't quite confirm that yet as I am now getting test failures and
haven't yet had chance to look into them.

FYI, Enrique had this errors on Mac OS-X with a buggy version of the
apple JVM. I was able to reproduce the problem on my mac too. Thanks to
him, as he gave me the link to a newest version for the JVM, this
problem has been fixed.
I engage you strongly to move to a newer JVM : 1.5.0_04 is pretty old !
The latest 1.5 version is 1.5.0_14...
