The pom.xml of the example uses 1.5.4, and the artifact runs well with
ApacheDS 1.5.4.
But I can reproduce your problem with a current 1.5.5. The example jar,
if used with this version simply does not work due to changes in the API.
I will update the example to work with the 1.5.5 in the evening. Stay
tunes ...
