Ok, the real problem seems to be the folding.
As long as I the number of loaded items (click on ou=groups and hit F5) is less 
than the threshold for folding, the quick search works fine (with the selected 
base) and it's item appears inline. If however, there are too many items, and 
it is folding, the quick search item doesn't get displayed.
