Actually, concerning OpenLDAP installation, the best solution is to grab a
installer on http://ltb-project.org/wiki/, or from https://symas.com/downloads/
(they do have a Windows version, even if it's an old one).
Concerning OpenLDAP configuration, teh best would be to get the "Mastering
OpenLDAP" book, that is probably one of the best source when it comes to
understand how to install and run OpenLDAP. Otherwise, the two other sources
are www.openldap.org/doc/admin24/index.html and teh man pages. It's abrupt, and
you may not find all what you need to know easily.
As I already said, OpenLDAP and ApacheDS are *huge* pieces of software with
hundreds of thousand line of code each, and it's quite hard to cover all the
different use cases in a documentation (I'm not talking about the big holes we
have in ApacheDS documentation here...).
Anyway, I perfectly understand your frustration. Would you have some specific
question regarding the configuration of both OpenLDAP or ApacheDS, feel free to
post a mail on the ApacheDS users MailingList
