Stefan Seelmann commented on DIRSTUDIO-1260:
--------------------------------------------
May I ask which Java version you have installed?
Path {{/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home}} seems
to point to a old Oracle Java 8 JRE. I was able to reproduce that behaviour
when deleting all JDKs, then I only installed Oracle JDK 8u271. After that I
get the same error when starting Studio. So it seems in Big Sur the default
java executable points to the JRE/Plugin which isn't sufficient to run Studio.
Studio just uses the default system Java (if nothing else is configured).
Honestly I'm afraid such issues will continue to happen, with all the different
operating systems and versions and java installations out there :).
I think a newer Java version will fix is too because newer versions seem to
take precedence and don't include the separate JRE/Applet installation
location. Please note that the next version of Studio anyway won't work with
Java 8 anyway.

> After upgrade to Big Sur Apache Directory Studio fails to start (Can't create
> JVM).
> This may be due to one (or both) of the following:
> 1) behavior of /usr/libexec/java_home has changed. It now produces no output
> if JAVA_HOME is already defined.
> 2) The JAVA_HOME value now has a space in the pathname. So all uses of
> JAVA_HOME in shell scripts $JAVA_HOME need to be quoted.
> $ echo $JAVA_HOME
> /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home
> Tried deletion and re-install. No change.
