I have uploaded a draft "template" (in .odt format) for OOoV3 user guide
chapters. Later on I'll also provide a proper template (.ott).
http://oooauthors.org/en/authors/userguide3/res3/chapter_template_v3_JHW_03June2008.odt
I think I've included all the necessary styles, but no doubt some tweaking
to the styles will be needed before it's reasonably stable. And some more
instructions may be necessary. This one document is intended to serve (as
Gary was doing) as both a template and a template how-to, instead of having
separate documents for the two purposes as we had in the past.
I borrowed from Gary's draft style changes, modifying all the styles to fit
a landscape orientation intended for onscreen viewing. I also took into
account the excellent comments made in discusssions on these lists over the
past few days, for which I thank the participants very much.
As always, comments on this draft are welcome. Barring dramatic objections
to anything I've done, I think it's ready to use.
BTW, I started from a blank file containing no custom styles, and I did NOT
load or copy any styles from existing documents. The first time I tried
this, I loaded styles and ended up with some junk that caused problems... no
doubt related to the long and convoluted history of our documents. So, to
avoid any historical problems creeping in to the new template, I started
over and manually entered all the necessary styles. If you choose to modify
anything in this template, please do NOT do it by loading or copying styles
as that might contaminate the clean file.

Hello Jean,
If you don't mind I would like to re-work the hierarchical structure of the
styles since at present it is not very clean. For that purpose I think we
should:
1) create OOoHeading and place OOoHeading n under it
2) create OOoContents and place OOoContents n under it
3) move the list styles and OOoNumbered styles under OOoList on turn placed
under OOoTextBody
4) Do we need OOoTextBodyNoIndent?
5) make OOoFootnote not linked to Footnote
6) move the OOoToCHead one level up (under OOoHeading)
7) move OOoTableHeader under OOoTableText
8) do we need the differentiation between OOoGuideName and OOoHeading0? I am
tempted to create a single style (OOoTitle).
9) do we need OOoPageBreak and OOoDefinition?
With the above structure we can change the font style for the whole guide
with very few clicks . An even better change would be to replace the font
size with percentage values so that by just changing the parent's style font
size all the other sizes change accordingly.
If you don't mind I am prepared to perform these changes both to the pdf
version template and to the "normal" template.
Two more comments:
1) I would change the language to English USA (or even better to English UK)
2) I don't like BitstreamVera Serif and I don't like Deja Vu Serif either.
Both fonts work best in their sans version. What other fonts are shipped
with OOo?
Cheers,
Michele
Make the language: English US, instead of USA because that's the way it
always seems to be expressed.
The guide material installed on the real template should include some
examples of how (and why) the various lists work--their list and
paragraph styles.
BTW, the extraneous text on the template (the guide) should have some
simple instructions about selecting (Ctrl+A) and deleting it in order to
create a clean blank copy before its first use. Easy to do, but it
should be located at the very start of the template.
