Another month has passed... well almost, and it's time to have a quick
look at where we are with the Documentation Project.
Last month I mentioned that the OOoWiki CSS was getting some attention
and rework. That is complete now thanks to a lot of effort by IvanM and
everyone else who tested and provided feedback. Now the OOoWiki patches
the www.openoffice.org website in general look and feel, and it looks great!
The plan to update the Wiki engine is still in the works, and I hope to
have more on this in January sometime. MediaWiki 1.14 should be out by
then, and we will be able to take advantage of all the improvements and
extensions that require 1.13 or higher.
There are a few extension requests in the works, and you can find the
(short) list here:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Wiki_maintenance#Wiki_Extension_Requests
The most recent addition is a Page Rating extension requested by the UX
team. They are testing it to see how well it works, and if it works OK,
we can look at possibly implementing it on the Documentation pages (I'm
thinking of the FAQ pages here).
Another big project that is slowly being worked through is a shuffle of
the webpage titles to bring all the localizations together under their
respective ISO Language code. So far, we've sorted out JA, FR, IT, and
KO... and there are many more to go. The page moves will pick up again
in January.
We've also started looking at redesigning the main Documentation Wiki
page. The test page is here:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Talk:Documentation/testpage
and is slowly shaping up into a usable page. Still to do here:
- add pages to the various Categories we are using to dynamically
generate the lists for each topic
- add/change a few icons to add some variety to the page
- add a few more topics (if needed) to the User and Developer categories
Some of the extended community are starting to show more interest in
what we as a group are doing on the OOoWiki, and we are starting to get
some comments on the Discussion pages... for example:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Talk:Documentation/OOoAuthors_User_Manual/Writer_Guide/Developing_conditional_content
We need to think about how we can monitor these comments - especially
catching the new ones that come in - and then respond to them.
This is, of course, only a short list of all the activities that are
going on in the project. We are a busy group :-)
Most, if not all of us regardless of where we are on the planet, are
sliding into the December holidays now. Enjoy it, and we will all be
back in January! :-)
