I think what he is probably looking for is what OpenOffice.org calls a text *frame*. I sent him a note about this offlist, referencing where that info is located.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I really enjoy the features and benefits in Open Office. I have used
WordPerfect in the past and liked many of its features. In particular the

have tried several approaches and used the help function but nothing seems
to work for text boxes.

Hi Allen

You've sent your email to the documentation mailing list - a list that is used for discussing the development of OpenOffice.org documentation. For general user help, you are best to email the User Mailing list (see http://support.openoffice.org/ for information on the mailing list and other support options) or post to the User Forum at http://user.services.openoffice.org/

To answer your question, you can insert a text box in Writer by using the Text button on the Drawing toolbar. If the Drawing toolbar is not visible, you can turn it on by clicking: View > Toolbars > Drawing Click the T button on the toolbar, drag the box to the size you want and enter your text.
