In a recent note I referred to the evaluation going on at OOo
Marketing regarding the marketing plan, and the discussion thread on
that topic. One of Lars's posts includes a reference to OOoAuthors:
http://marketing.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=dev&msgNo=29827
He says in that post:
"Documentation at OOo Authors should be seen as a marketing advantage
and kept fresh. Many capabilities essential to large enterprises,
such as digital signatures, are not widely known or adequately used.
There are a number of print-on-demand shops that could be used as
supplemental distribution channels and to provide income to the project."
Keeping the docs "fresh" (up to date) is a big problem unless more
people get involved in a proactive way... and unless some of those
people know enough to write about features that haven't been covered
(or not very much) from a user point of view.
POD copies of some books are already being provided, with more to
come, and plans for better distribution. As some of you know, these
printed copies are being produced and distributed through the auspices
of an Australian organisation (Friends of OpenDocument Inc), which
exists mainly to accept and disburse money for unincorporated
organisations like OOoAuthors and the OpenDocument Fellowship.
Essentially, I am doing all the work on the publishing end.
I'll be writing some other notes to this list about this work, and the
organisation, and the help I would like to get from others, and
whether we should change what we're doing, etc. Meanwhile, for anyone
interested, the website is: http://friendsofopendocument.com/
There's not a lot there other than financial statements and meeting
minutes. Costs nothing to join. :-)
