discussion board, they would be if they could be eliminated

Hi Ray,
You need to use page styles, one or more with single column and one or
more with two columns. When you need to switch use Insert> Manual
Break. Select Page break and under Style select the proper page style
for the next page.
You can find all the users manuals for Writer 3.# are at [1], select the
ones for your version. Look for the chapter on Formatting pages and
have a look.
