Zookeeper membership is used to detect Drillbit death. Each node uses the Curator ServiceDiscovery framework to create an emphermal node in zookeeper. Drillbit registered and unregistered messages occur when nodes are added or removed from this list. Jinfeng worked on a bunch of this functionality and should be able to provide more details.
