Good news - it looks I already solved the problem. I had time during my train ride home and I think that something has changed in lift. The servlet context is now set correctly.
I tried it in Tomcat and jetty. The change actually simplifies our code. I'll commit my changes on Friday and let everyone else take a look at it. D.
