Fixes #2599.
### Motivation
Call to toString with null check warns about NPE.
### Modifications
Wrapping the extracting the `getExtension` call with default value into a
separate method.
I have also modified the code to suppress other warnings. Please let me know
if these belong to a different ticket so I revert them.
