I think this is the result of software entropy... I.e. when the tests were added things worked, for a while. Then a number of things may have interfered, such as new JDK, other dependencies, Maven. When I ran the tests, the JVM crashed completely, but I was able to trace some of that to the whole XML/XSL package nightmare (i.e. xml apis/impl in JDK, dependency and Maven), but unable to resolve it to a working solution, so I finally gave up.
