Hmm I apologise... I tried to download the tarball three times from three
different mirrors and it was corrupt, i.e. the standard UNIX "tar ztvf" command
could not open it. Now I cannot reproduce the problem. I was using a 3G USB
modem at the time, perhaps the file was corrupted during transfer.
