What i've done:
* downloaded SMX 4.1.0 snapshot build #195
* downloaded karaf 1.3.0 Mon Feb 08 00:44:46 GMT+00:00 2010
4360928
* put downloaded karaf "system" folder contents in smx system folder
* deleted the "data" dir to be sure everything is clear
* started smx and waited till all bundles are loaded (remark: no ansi support
on first start)
* shut down smx
* started it again (remark: ansi support from start now)
After this the original described behaviour applys...
