Michael, Thanks for starting this thread. Being sensitive of the distinction between Mifos and Fineract communities, I know there was a Fineract Hipchat set up previously but I think that's no longer supported by Apache Infra.
I think Apache now supports slack channels for projects but I'm not sure the process of activating or setting those up. So it is probably best to try and determine and/or set up the official IM channel for Fineract. For Mifos, we try to use the gitter chatrooms for public facing chat on each of the projects and the general mifos one. Slack has primarily been used for internal group collaboration like GSOC, etc. but I'm happy to have anybody join the genera Mifos Slack channel. Mifos will also soon be launching its Discourse site to provide forum-style/mailing list communications as a replacement for the mifos developer and user lists.
