I dug up the commit email.  It looks right, but an attempt to use that
hash to view history doesn't work.  It is disturbing that a merge can
remove history.  I would expect it to simply show another change in the
history.

So now back to the questions about the code itself.  Can you provide more
detail on why you added that clearFlag call?  We need to understand
whether that change still needs to be reverted or the tests should be
changed.
