In that thread, Chris clarified that the problem was with the signing part
of the install that was breaking the build (no keys on server)  He also
mentioned that the assembly plugin (the one that creates the compressed
source artifacts) are not available with the apache-release configuration.

I dint quite understand what the issue there was.  So, I have created a
separate assembly target to work around this issue.

You are right, lets wait till Chris responds to decide on what to do next.
