Sencha have managed to achieve a consistent HBOX/VBOX implementation in their ExtJS and Touch frameworks. I think the newest version is strictly commercial but the older ones are licensed <https://www.sencha.com/legal/open-source-faq/> under GPL v3. If not using the sources directly, they may at least be worth a look <http://docs.sencha.com/touch/2.4/2.4.2-apidocs/#!/api/Ext.layout.Box> . A link to the source appears by hovering over the class name.
