As for keeping the list up to date: We could add a CONTRIBUTORS file in the repository. This is common practice in many open source projects. Alternatively, we could also create a dedicated page on the web site. The ASF also has a contributor page on their website: http://httpd.apache.org/contributors/ We could then easily add more people to the list after they contributed.
