Just food for thought, but is this something that is actually needed in the 
apache flume distribution?

It sounds quite application specific. If it was to get included in flume, it 
would mean another component that needs to be maintained. I suspect a better 
way to share this would be as an installable plugin. Perhaps we could maintain 
a list of plugins for those interested, thus decoupling maintenance of core 
flume from more specific components.
