Mike Percy closed FLUME-1285.

Chetan, Hadoop JAR dependencies are a total nightmare (Guava, different Hadoop
versions, etc) so we never included the hadoop jar in the Flume release
packages. You have to add the hadoop jar to the classpath yourself, or by
defining HADOOP_HOME if you wanted the Flume startup script to try to do it for
you.
For people not writing to Hadoop, it was a pain if they just wanted the file
channel and some non-Hadoop sink.
Please file a new JIRA or raise an issue on the mailing list if you have some
concerns.
