I reverted those changes, which "fixes" the issue.
Don't know if it is related, but there was recent discussion on cocoon-dev
about issues with the "cocoon:" protocol.

Description:
When doing 'forrest', the cocoon starts, but hangs and no document processing
messages are emitted and no indication in the logs. Then need to Ctrl-C it.
When doing 'forrest run' the same happens, but with an error message
"java.lang.StackOverflowError".
