The locationmap branch does *exactly* what you describe :-))
When you change the name of myfile.xml to mynewfile.xml all you would need to
do is add an entry in the locationmap that would match myfile.xml (don't
change site.xml).
Now when Forrest fails to find myfile.xml in {proect:content.xdocs} it looks in
the lcoationmap, finds the match and serves mynewfile.xml
The URL that the user sees (and that the site developers work with) has not
changed, only the location of the source file has changed.
