You can as well "svn switch" your trunk to the new branch (less
download). In general the command is perfectly alright.
Yes, switch is your friend, it will reduce a 50Mb+ checkout to a few
kilobytes.
It also makes it really easy to switch back to trunk if you need to do
something there.
