I have been using Pavel's 680 builds (m185 currently) and find the icon
on the menu bar irritating. Why? Because it cannot be removed and
because the update feature is easily available from the Help menu. So
can we lose the icon or place it on a toolbar that is configurable.

Pavel recommended asking here about changing this.

That icon is not meant to trigger the check for an update, but to signal
that there is an update available.

Thanks. I didn't realize that the icon was part and parcel with, what I
call ET call home.
We call it Online Update Notification.

Oh well, since the decision is made that users will
have no configuration control seems to be in stone, I can only hope that
the feature will be accepted. I suspect though that many users will not
like having this decision taken from them.

Please note that the user always had and will have the option to configure the feature in the dialog Tools / Options / OpenOffice.org / Online Update.
