I'm not sure if your proposed change is a goo idea. Indeed many commands
on Windows using CTRL are exactly the same on Mac, but using Cmd. So the
current approach saves us a lot of platform specific shortcuts.

What is the benefit of mapping CTRL to MOD1 on Mac? For whom is the
current approach confusing? Users never will see a "MOD1" anywhere and
developers should be able to cope with it.
