The graphite01 CWS adds support for Graphite Fonts to be correctly
displayed in OpenOffice on both Windows and Linux.
It is not only displayed, but also used for layout, printing,
PDF-export, fontworks etc.
What is the rationale between the fact that this is not supported on the
Mac (yet)?
Smart fonts that don't need explicit L10 support from the I18N system
(like OpenType) are already supported on OSX via the AAT-system ("Apple
Advanced Typography")
Here is a quote from the Graphite-FAQ:
"Apple has for years provided truly extensible smart font support for
potentially all known writing systems, through their earlier GX and more
recent AAT technologies. However, their solutions are proprietary and
available only on the Macintosh. Graphite has been implemented on
Windows and is open-sourced. Graphite also includes a rule-based
programming language (GDL) to facilitate font development, while AAT
development requires more direct construction of the font tables."
So supporting Graphite on OSX is not as urgently needed as on other
platforms. Also OOoAqua is planning to move from using the ATSUI API to
the CoreText API on OSX versions that support the newer API.
Considering all of the above spending any valuable resources into
integrating the currently used ATSUI-based shaping engine with the
graphite system doesn't sound like such a winning decision anymore:
- it is not as urgently needed on OSX because there are established
alternatives
-the integration work done now would be obsoleted once we move to CoreText
I'm preparing a pr on this new feature/OOo 3.2, so would like to know.
Thanks!
