Right now the "new" console portlets don't really have any good validation
mechanism. The JMS portlet is better than average in this regard in that it
can send you back to the previous page if it notices an error on submit (and it
uses this in a couple places to check for required values), but even then
there's no standard way to render error messages for the page or for individual
fields.
Ideally we might find a good portlet web framework to use that supports
validation, but in the mean time, we should think about finding some
general-purpose solution for the console portlets.
