IIUC currently all the references in a components enc are wrapped in a CachingReference. For EntityManager lookups I believe we need non-caching references since EntityManagers are not supposed to be shared between threads. My current TxScoped EntityManager can actually be shared among all threads but the Extended one can't and I don't see how to make it shareable.

Does this seem like a reasonable request?

Java EE 5 in general operates this way. For example in EJB 3, when you look up a stateful session bean's business interface in JNDI, you get a new session bean instance.
