start/stop/restart on SM

It would be a nice feature if the SM startup scripts were parameterized with
-start, -restart, -stop, so you don't have to manually kill the processes as
processes can be hard to distinguish between, at least in UNIX environments.
I will try to provide a patch if I have the time....
