Second patch (in two parts) from Jeremy Bauer applied in rev 721006, 721010,
and 721042.
There were some merge problems that I think were caused by tabs. Therefore I
reformatted using IDEA and committed in rev. 721048.
Snapshot pushed to apache snapshot repo.
