Hey just wanted to let you know, I pasted this review in from notes I took 
while reading your diff, then was distracted helping someone with (ironic) an 
IO format problem, and then turned back to the rb and pressed "publish" without 
remembering to edit. Wish there was an edit button. I will be more careful next 
time, parts of this are far from clear. Short version: Its a great patch that 
makes the steps to an IO format more clear for users (the "them" I keep 
mentioning above. sigh.) , and if there's a way to tweak it so that the user 
has fewer steps to writing an IO format than they had before, it would be a 
double win. Nice work!
