I think this is a great incremental improvement and as Eli mentions, we have a
long way to go in improving performance here further. Let's at least get this
in for now and keep trying to improve it further.
We do lose the client-side combiner, but its of dubious use. If anyone finds a
real need for it, we can try and add it back in.
