I guess because for us this wasn't making a big difference - our network is
fast enough that the benefit from reduced network traffic was about the same as
the overhead of doing compression. Although many things changed since then with
network and GC so it might be different now. Patch is completely outdated, but
I can revisit it if you think it could be useful for others?
