I will look into this. I did some further work after the GORA-292 patch and it
appears that we would have to dispose of all custom encoders in gora-accumulo
to solve the problems with the UNION types.
Just to reiterate, and if I understand correctly, this is all in the GORA_94
branch, which is not yet merged to trunk.
