My vote would be to handle Utf8 silently. Mongo's limitation should not be a limitation for Gora, consequently for Nutch. But, I think Mongo *does* have builtin support for Utf8. I think the problem is that the org.apache.avro.util.Utf8 class isn't serializable. See AVRO-200 [1] and the corresponding AVRO-80. So, can we just call toString() on the Utf8 object before putting it into Mongo? Not an exact solution, but more information. [1] - https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/AVRO-200 Tyler
