I spotted that the Gradle build now seeks out material in
http://gradle.sourceforge.net/gradleRepo. I guess I failed to read an
important email somewhere down the line. Is there a reason for
having a
manually maintained mirror rather than just going direct to the Maven
repository?

The reason is that we need artifacts which are not in maven central.
Artifacts available in maven central are downloader from there.

OK, that works for me :-)

Bizarre that the artefacts are not being uploaded to an accessible
Maven-like repository is not to Maven itself.

Some of them are our own test artifacts we have put there for our integration tests. Others are related to docbook generation.

BTW: It would be nice to use a codehaus repository for this. I have to ask Ben about that. The Maven repositories provided by Codehaus are for publishing the Gradle project not for dependencies.
