I agree that covariant returns should be allowed. They have been in
since Java 5 and that is the floor for Gradle.

The problem appears to be with OpenJDK as shipped with Ubuntu 9.04 --
both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
It seems this version of OpenJDK is fubar wrt covariant returns.
